Lt. Steven P. Demo was a Portsmouth Police Officer who was assigned to the NH Drug Task Force as the Operations Officer. Steve was diagnosed with cancer in the late 1990's. While undergoing treatment, Steve noted the expenses that come along with medical visits and stays that aren't covered by insurance. In 1999, Steve's family and friends held a BBQ to raise money to send him and his family to Disney Wold. From this event $52,000 was raised. From that money, Steve was able to establish a trust for his three children, Trevor, Brendan and Cassidy and then presented a portion of the money to the NH Police Association to start a cancer fund to help his brother and sister officers in their fights against the disease. Steve passed away on July 9th, 2000 after a long battle with cancer. In his memory, the Steven P. Demo Cops with Cancer Fund was created. Today it is funded by donations, an annual golf tournament and sponsorships. The goal of this fund is to provide financial assistance to officers and their families to help pay for additional expenses such as lodging, food, gas, etc. while seeking treatment.
Special Agent William "Billy" H. Yout was a career Drug Enforcement Administration Agent and was the Resident Agent in charge of the NH District DEA Office for many years. Throughout his 32-year career, Billy was committed to drug enforcement and awareness in New Hampshire. He supported the NH Elks Association's Drug Awareness Program as well as the NH Police Cadet Explorers Academy. Steve Demo and Billy worked extensively together and collaborated with local and federal agencies to fight the war on drugs in NH. Like Steve, Billy lost his battle with cancer in 2004 after a year long battle. Billy's family and friends created the Billy Yout Memorial Fund to help raise money and provide a scholarship for an individual in the biennial Police Cadet Explorers Academy.
Commander James "Jim" R. Norris was a career NH Law Enforcement Officer. He served 20 years with the New Hampshire State Police then led the NH Attorney General's Drug Task Force until his retirement in August of 2012. Jim was committed to fighting the war on drugs and worked closely with both Billy Yout and Steve Demo. Jim sadly passed away in February of 2020, and the catastrophe fund was created in his memory.
